Hackathon is an opportunity for technology lovers to create solutions to everyday’s hitches in their respective communities. The chosen theme is generally driven by the major outbreaks identified in a country or a community, and relies on one or more SDG’s targets.
By providing these layers of the population with the ability to find, evaluate, produce and communicate clear information through writing and other forms of communication on various digital platforms, digital literacy will significantly contribute to reducing the digital divide.
Free flow of information is one of the main criteria used to determine the level of peace in a country, following the Global Peace Index (GPI). In the thirteenth edition of the GPI issued in June 2019, several sub-Saharan African countries are positioned at the bottom of the ladder of peace, one of the main reasons being their decline in the free flow of information in recent years. A broad view of the GPI report shows that these countries also have a weak index on internet freedom and digital rights, as well as the freedom of the press. […]
Ultimately, to safeguard the existing and predict any possible decline of peace, each country presented in this top 15, regardless of the number of times and category, should be closely watched and monitored by civil liberties defenders.
That digital divide impacts the way how cultural goods and services are created, produced, distributed and accessed (operational guideline N° 4). Therefore, emphasising on the fact that roughly half the world’s population still lacks internet access or is using only a fraction of its potential despite being connected, the report advocates the building of an inclusive digital economy and society.
